Dr. Timothy Planty, OD

Therapeutic Optometrist

Dr. Planty grew up in Syracuse, New York where he graduated from St. Vincent de Paul High School and attended college before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970. While in the military he received training as an optician and gained valuable experience as an optometric assistant and with fitting, dispensing and fabricating eyeglasses. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he pursued his certification as a Certified Optician and later as a Master Optician. Additionally, he also pursued an Associate in Science degree from Onondaga Community College before moving to Texas in 1973 to finish his pre-Optometry requirements at Lee College as a Distinguished Scholar (4.0 GPA) in 1975. From there he attended the University of Houston's College of Optometry where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1977 and his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1979.

In 1979, Dr. Planty opened his private practice in Baytown and has been providing primary eye care services for 29 years. His primary area of interests are fitting difficult contact lens cases such as toric contacts for astigmatism, bifocal contact lenses for presbyopia, medically necessary contacts for kerataconus.

In 1993, he went back to class to receive his Therapeutic license to be able to diagnose, treat and manage eye infections, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and preform foreign body removal of the cornea and conjunctiva.

In 1997, he joined the staff of the Laser Eye Institute of Houston and became certified to co-manage Refractive Eye Surgeries such as PRK and LASIK. Continuing his desire to improve the quality of vision for his patients, the Laser Center now has available Custom LASIK, LADAR Vision correction and Laser-Laser Vision Correction.

In 2002, Dr. Planty joined the staff at San Jacinto Junior College to teach the Optical Dispensing I and II courses as well as Ocular Pharmacology in the Vision Care Program that produces an Associate degree for certifying Ophthalmic Technicians and Assistants. His professional interests have him being an active member of the Harris County Optometric Society where he is currently the Vice-President and in the past has served on the Board of Directors as well as Secretary and Treasurer of the organization. He is also a member of the Texas Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the Laser Eye Institute of Houston.

Personally, he is involved with the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Baytown and has coached in the Baytown Teenage Baseball Association's Colt League from 1981 to 1996. In 1993, he was awarded by PONY Baseball as their choice to coach in the Baseball USA sponsored Olympic Festival held at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. In 1996, he founded and coaches a select baseball team, the Baytown Knights, that travels around the state showcasing talented, local high school players to college coaches, trying to get them scholarships.
